A Stray B!llet Killed 16- Year- Old Zamawushe in Cape Town

A community in Cape Town is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Zamawushe Momoti, a 16-year-old student from Athlone. Zamawushe was killed in a gang crossfire near her school on April 19, 2024.

Zamawushe was waiting for her school transport shortly after 1 p.m. when gunfire erupted between rival gangs in close proximity to her school. In a desperate attempt to find safety, she was shot in the face. Despite her severe injuries, she managed to make it back to the school grounds but collapsed in the parking area. Tragically, she died from her injuries.

In the same incident, a 20-year-old man was also killed, just a few meters away from the school. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the tragic events. On the same day, a man was arrested in connection with Zamawushe’s murder, but SAPS later confirmed that the suspect was released on Sunday and the charges against him were withdrawn. At this time, no other arrests have been made.

Zamawushe was a resident of Browns Farm, Philippi, and a Grade 11 student at Belgravia High School. She had dreams of becoming a doctor or an accountant—ambitions that will never be realized. Her loss is deeply felt by her family, friends, and the broader community. The senseless violence that took her life has left many grieving and seeking answers.

The tragedy underscores the ongoing problem of gang violence in areas like Athlone, highlighting the urgent need for effective strategies to ensure the safety of young people in these communities. The loss of Zamawushe is a painful reminder that more must be done to protect our youth and ensure they can pursue their dreams without fear.

As we remember Zamawushe Momoti, let us honor her memory by seeking positive change and taking action against gang violence. Rest in power, Zamawushe.
