Legendary Kwaito Star Doc Shebeleza Passes Away at 51

The music world is mourning the loss of legendary kwaito pioneer Doc Shebeleza, whose real name was Victor Bogopane. The 51-year-old artist passed away in hospital after battling a long illness, as confirmed by his family.

Doc Shebeleza, a trailblazer in the kwaito music scene, had been hospitalised in June 2024 following a serious health scare. He rose to stardom with his debut album, S’Kumfete, which was released on cassette in 1996. The album became an instant classic, producing hit tracks like Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa.

During the 1990s, Shebeleza also founded the all-male group Amaskumfete, renowned for their popular tracks such as Tsipa Tsipa. His music resonated deeply with fans, weaving personal stories of relationships, struggles, and joy into lyrics that built a strong emotional connection with listeners.

Doc Shebeleza’s influence on the kwaito genre was immense, inspiring a new generation of artists, including Mandoza and Mapaputsi. His artistic legacy was further celebrated in 2014 through Cassper Nyovest’s hit song Doc Shebeleza, which became a chart-topping success and highlighted his enduring impact across generations.

In later years, Shebeleza dedicated himself to philanthropy through his organisation, Amaha, focusing on uplifting fellow artists and supporting the creative community.

Doc Shebeleza’s passing leaves a significant void in the South African music industry, but his contributions to kwaito and his commitment to empowering others will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
