In a heartbreaking accident this morning, a nine-year-old girl tragically lost her life on her way to school in Ekurhuleni, after a collision with a BMW allegedly driven by a 29-year-old man who fled the scene.
Incident Details and Victims’ Condition
The accident took place around 7:30 a.m. when a Hyundai Grand i10, driven by the young girl’s mother, collided with the BMW in Tembisa. The young victim’s 13-year-old neighbor, also a passenger, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tembisa Hospital along with the girl’s mother.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato provided further details, saying, “The nine-year-old was declared dead at the scene, while the mother and the older child were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.”
Suspected Driver’s Identity and Items Found at Scene
Makgato also revealed that the driver of the BMW is suspected to be a professional soccer player, though verification of his license record is still ongoing. The presence of four bottles of high-potency Don Julio tequila, a substance suspected to be cocaine, and cannabis-infused edibles was found inside the vehicle, raising further concern about drug and alcohol use among drivers.
Investigation and Charges Filed
The driver’s decision to leave the scene has added severity to the case, which has been classified as culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and fleeing an accident scene.
“A case has been opened, but the driver’s identity will remain confidential until investigations are complete,” Makgato stated.
