Unrest at the Awards Ceremony
The Skeem Saam cast and crew nearly went on a rampage during the Royalty Soapie Awards on Saturday night, 24 August. The prestigious event, hosted by comedian Mpho Popps and TV presenter Nomalanga Shozi, took place at the Heartfelt Arena in Tshwane.
A Mistaken Announcement
Tensions rose when one of Skeem Saam‘s actors was mistakenly shown as the winner of the Outstanding Newcomer Award. The crew began chanting “Skeem Saam,” leading Mpho Popps to step in and clear up the confusion.
“There was a clip on screen, but the person who won, actress Nefisa Mkhabela, is the correct one who was announced. We would like to apologize for the technical glitch,” he said.
A Moment of Redemption
The Skeem Saam team’s disappointment was short-lived, as their spirits lifted when one of their own won the Viewer’s Choice Award in the Best Female Actress category. A large group from the team took the stage to celebrate with Lethabo Mekoa.
An Emotional Acceptance Speech
Crying on stage, Lethabo expressed her gratitude: “I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity today. I’ve been through a lot as young as I am.”
Celebrating the Legends
The audience was treated to nostalgic performances by musicians like Keabetswe “KB” Motsilanyane and Zola 7. Additionally, legendary actor Dr. Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and filmmaker and producer Duma Ndlovu also received recognition
