Isiphetho – Destiny Cancelled by E.tv: Third Drama Axed from Primetime Lineup
E.tv has officially cancelled the drama series Isiphetho – Destiny after just one season, joining a list of other shows the channel has dropped from its coveted 6:30 pm primetime slot.
Why
On Tuesday, 22 October 2024, E.tv confirmed the cancellation of Isiphetho – Destiny, a drama that had premiered only in April 2024. This is the third major show the channel has cancelled from its 6:30 pm slot, following in the footsteps of Durban Gen and Nikiwe. Isiphetho – Destiny Cancelled is the unfortunate headline, as fans hoped the show would return for a second season.
The show, which stars Gugu Gumede, Linda Sokhulu, Peter Mashigo, Mjosti Mbhele, Kope “Tswyza” Makgae, and Mbalenhle Mavimbela, brought a captivating tale of friendship, community, and second chances. Despite the positive reception, E.tv has decided not to renew the show.
E.tv’s Response
Vuyelwa Booi, E.tv’s manager of Local Programming, expressed gratitude to the production team, Black Brain Pictures, for bringing the story to life but gave no specific reason for the cancellation.
“The channel would like to express its sincere gratitude to Black Brain Pictures for their dedication to bringing this story of community, friendship, and second chances to life. While a second season is not currently planned, E.tv is committed to offering viewers a diverse and engaging primetime lineup,” Booi stated.
Production Team’s Remarks
Mpumelelo Nhlapo, the executive producer of Black Brain Pictures, and director Mandla N both shared their thanks to the channel and the hardworking production team.
“Taking on the coveted 6:30 pm slot has been an honour and, most importantly, a learning curve for us,” said Nhlapo.
Mandla N praised the team for their dedication, saying, “It has been a privilege to create the show, and we would also like to thank the entire production team for their hard work.”
Previous Cancellations
This marks the third cancellation of a primetime show on E.tv in recent years. The previous dramas axed for not delivering the anticipated ratings were Durban Gen in January 2023 and Nikiwe in January 2024. Here’s a breakdown of the cancellations:
Show | Cancelled Date | Reason |
---|---|---|
Rhythm City | July 2021 | Not disclosed |
Durban Gen | January 2023 | Poor ratings |
Nikiwe | January 2024 | Failed to bring in numbers |
Isiphetho – Destiny | October 2024 | Failed to meet viewership targets |
Conclusion
Isiphetho – Destiny Cancelled adds to the list of shows unable to secure a second season in E.tv’s tough 6:30 pm slot. While it aimed to be a game-changer, much like its predecessors, the show couldn’t meet the channel’s expectations in terms of viewership. E.tv promises that more local entertainment will come, and they will announce its replacement soon.
