Siblings from KZN Marry and Have Three Children, Face Community Backlash

A woman from KwaZulu-Natal shared the heart-wrenching story of her marriage to her biological brother, with whom she had three children.

Despite facing ridicule and ostracization from their community, she recounted their journey together and the devastating consequences they faced upon discovering their true relationship. In her statement, the woman explained how she and her husband had met by chance, not knowing they were siblings. She was working as a housemaid when she first encountered him, and prior to that time, she had never met or known about him.

As their relationship developed, they became deeply infatuated with each other, eventually getting married and starting a family. It wasn’t until much later that they learned they were born to the same mother and father. This revelation came as a complete shock to both of them, as they had no prior knowledge of their shared parentage. By the time they discovered the truth, it was too late to undo the damage caused by their union.

The woman expressed her initial confusion and relief at being able to keep their relationship hidden from others, stating, “I was confused and satisfied with my ability to stay concealed from others.”However, the community’s reaction was far from understanding.

Once the truth came out, the couple faced significant harassment and scorn from their neighbors, who viewed their relationship as taboo. In African culture, marrying a sibling or relative is considered a grave taboo, believed to bring bad luck, and lead to negative consequences such as bearing unhealthy children. Tragically, this seemed to be the case for the couple, as their children died under mysterious circumstances, leaving them heartbroken and alone.

The woman’s husband appeared unfazed by the community’s judgment, but the harassment they endured eventually forced them to leave their home. Despite their attempts to move forward, they remain isolated, abandoned by their community and grappling with the profound loss of their children.

This story sheds light on the complexities and consequences of such relationships within cultural contexts that strongly prohibit them. It also highlights the harsh reality faced by individuals who unknowingly find themselves in such situations, dealing with both personal and societal repercussions.
