Amazon Recruitment Bursary for Aspiring Software Development Engineers

The Amazon Recruitment Bursary, launched in 2018 by the Amazon Development Centre, offers incredible opportunities for students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa. The bursary not only funds academic needs but also provides a pathway to full-time employment at one of the world’s most innovative tech companies.

What the Bursary Covers

Successful applicants will receive capped funding to cover the following academic expenses:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation (either university residence or private)
  • Subsistence (living costs)
  • Stationery and textbooks
  • A personal computer
  • Transport

Amazon Internship Opportunity

Bursary recipients must commit to participating in a paid Amazon internship during their summer vacation. This internship is a crucial phase where candidates work on impactful projects and solve complex engineering problems in areas like:

  • Distributed systems
  • Data mining
  • Automation
  • Scalability and security
  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence

Interns will also engage with Amazon professionals, grow their networks, and benefit from technical training and social events. Exceptional performance during this internship may lead to a full-time permanent Software Development Engineer (SDE) role starting in January 2028.

Eligibility Requirements

StudyTrust, in partnership with Amazon, invites applications from students who meet the following criteria:

Academic Criteria

  • Studying towards a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Data Science, Machine Learning, or Artificial Intelligence degree.
  • Must be in their final year of a 3-year degree OR the third year of a 4-year degree in 2026.
  • Intend to pursue Honours studies in 2027.
  • Must plan to complete all tertiary education (up to NQF level 8) by the end of 2027.
  • Must consistently maintain a minimum average of 65%.

Other Requirements

  • Only students from South African universities are eligible.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Must be available to start full-time employment at Amazon in January 2028.
  • Must show strong motivation and interest in joining Amazon and pursuing a career in software development.
  • Master’s students are not eligible to apply.

Bursary Conditions

  • Candidates must complete a paid internship and attend Amazon training opportunities.
  • To qualify for full bursary coverage, recipients must be open to accepting a full-time role at Amazon equivalent in duration to the years funded by the bursary (subject to offer after internship assessment).
