In addition to the deceased, three other children who consumed snacks from the same spaza shop are currently in critical condition at a local hospital. They presented similar symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, raising serious concerns about the safety of the products sold at the shop.

Ward Councillor Brenda Dammie expressed her sorrow and frustration over the loss of the young boy. She emphasized that the community had been warned about purchasing goods from certain spaza shops due to potential safety risks.

“We’ve been telling people to avoid buying from these shops. Just two weeks ago, I warned residents about the dangers of these snacks, and now we’ve lost a child. It’s heartbreaking,” Dammie stated.

Dammie also urged homeowners who rent their properties to spaza shop owners to take responsibility.

“We cannot force them to shut down the shops, but they need to recognize the dangers these businesses pose. This tragedy could have been avoided,” she added.
